SUSTAINABLE ROOFS

Less noise pollution, a longer lifespan for your roof covering and a reduced influence of fluctuations in the outside temperature. A sedum roof – also known as green roof – brings many benefits. People often speak of a roof garden, but what exactly is a sedum roof or roof garden?

A roof garden covered with sedum. Sustainability with many benefits.

A roof garden or sedum roof is, as the name suggests, a roof covered with sedum, a kind of succulent plant that can be used as roof covering. Sedum is a succulent plant and absorbs moisture in its leaves. Thus sedum can withstand against drought and heat a long period of time without too much damage. Although sedum plants can absorb a lot of water, it is important for a sedum roof that there is good drainage of rainwater. Otherwise, heavy rainfall can cause the plants to ‘drown’. This creates a huge stench and does not benefit the appearance of your roof garden either.

There are many different types of sedum plants, which enables you to beautifully work with contrasts and different colors on your roof garden. Sedum plants thrive on almost any surface, including the roof of your home, garage or office.

Different layers of a sedum roof or a roof garden

A sedum roof or roof garden consists of several layers. In order to keep up the lifespan of the sedum plants for as long as possible, the following layers are generally used. The order of the layers is classified low to high, so the bottom layer on the roof is the first one to be mentioned:

  • Double-layered, waterproof and root-resistant roof covering
  • Protective layer for the roof covering
  • Drainage layer (plastic or minerals)
  • Filtration layer
  • Soil for sedum plants
  • Sedum plants

Benefits of a sedum roof or roof garden

Your roof covering will last longer because the effect of sunlight and rain is reduced:

  • The effect of temperature changes is considerably reduced. This also has a positive effect on the lifespan of your roof covering
  • You do not have to heat up or cool down your home as you normally would. Because sedum roofs absorb heat and cold well, you will not be bothered by the outside temperature as much as usual
  • Less noise pollution thanks to the sound damping effect of the sedum plants
  • Sedum roofs or garden roofs last up to 3 times longer than ordinary roof covering
